Description of the exhibition
For the next exhibition, we would like to focus attention on the history of the Sinti and the Roma in Europe. They were subject to acts of genocide during the Second World War, yet many people are still unaware of that. On the Internet, too, there is very little information about those crimes (certainly in comparison to what can be found there regarding the Shoa). As the history of the Roma and the Sinti forms an integral part of our European history, we would like to make that information accessible in at least in Dutch, English, German, French and Romanes.
Who are the Roma and the Sinti, where did (and do) they live, what happened to them in the 1930s and during the Second World War and (how) have they managed to cope with the genocide since the Second World War? These are the main questions that are to form the basis for the new exhibition.
The purpose of the exhibition is to provide an informative, accurate and interactive account of the life of Sinti and Roma in Europe before, during and after the war. After having viewed the exhibition, visitors should have a clear idea of what these people have gone through.
The point is to introduce the visitor in the subject, to inform more deeply and to motivate him/her to search further. By means of some life stories of victims and survivors in The Netherlands (Settela, Zoni Weisz) and other European countries it will be easier for the visitor to identify him/her self with the subject. These personal stories offers the possibility to explain issues such as forced labour camps, mass shootings, deportations and the life in concentration camps.
