Can one be a Catholic priest and an observant Jew at the same time? Romuald Waszkinel had been serving for more than a decade in the Polish Catholic Church when he realized that he came to this world as a child of Jewish parents, originally under the name of Jacob Weksler. His parents gave him up for adoption to a Polish Catholic family, before they were deported to Auschwitz. Approaching retirement, Romuald/Jacob goes to live in a religious Israeli kibbutz, to get to know the observant Jew’s life.
The film depicts his incredible journey. We see him celebrating a mass in the church of Lublin, and we also see him learning how to live in the kibbutz lead by strict religious rules. But is it possible to live according to two, deeply felt religious beliefs? Can he keep his Catholic faith as a Jew, and will the Jewish religious community and the Israeli state accept him?
