A People Uncounted

The first-time filmmaker challenged himself to a great extent when he decided to present the situation of European Roma to a wider audience. In his interpretation, today’s situation of the Roma is closely connected to their persecution during the Second World War and the still largely unknown and rarely discussed story of their deportation and annihilation – the Phorrajmos. The world has forgotten the Nazi genocide’s hundreds of thousands of Roma victims.
Yeger’s film is not the first documentary that wants to deal with this topic, but it differs from its predecessors, by being a larger scale project with a deeper approach and a more overarching agenda. At the same time, the work is absorbing, visually ambitious and “audience-friendly”. The filmmakers shot in eleven countries, with a large number of Roma people, amongst them many survivors of the Holocaust. Leading experts of the subject provide the context to the stories. It was high time for such an important topic to be featured in a full-length documentary film. We hope many people will see it!
