A lyrical interlude from the orchestra forms the introduction to the prayer from the living for the dead, sung by the soprano, tenor and baritone: ‘Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine’ - ‘Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord’ – after which the orchestra continues with the theme.
At the end of an instrumental interlude another kettledrum roll forms the introduction to the chaotic reprise of the first section, ending in a joint cry ‘Libera me’ from the choir and soloists.
The string theme from the ‘Praeludium’ marks the final. The choir says goodbye with a solemn amen, followed by eight tolls of the bells.
The musical piece ends with a mysterious chord in unison from the strings.

‘Libera me, Domine’, Deliver me, O Lord. How often has this cry reverberated the buildings and hallways of Auschwitz. A million times. To then scream in infinite disappointment and rage: ‘When the Heavens and the Earth shall be moved, when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire’.
How many times did they pray for revenge and retribution, that their tormentors would tremble at the sight of God's wrath. That they will be punished by fire, as they have destroyed their victims with fire.
The only thing left for us to do, is to commemorate all these souls and to pray for them: ‘Lord, have mercy upon them. Hear my prayer. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may everlasting light shine upon them. Amen.
