"My parents and my sister and brother were arrested on May 16, 1944, together with all the other Sinti and Roma who were captured by the Nazis.
At that time, I was staying with my aunt. When we heard of this raid, we immediately went into hiding, but were caught and to be deported to Westerbork. This happened on May 19, 1944.
The so-called 'gipsy transport' had already departed and they could not get us on the train in time. Therefore, they decided to take us to the railway station in Assen.
At the station I saw my father and mother and my sister and brother in a cattle-truck for the last time.
When I walked up to join them, a 'good' police officer pushed me back and told me to "get lost".
The rest of the war we spent in hiding. I was 7 years old at the time and at first I stayed with my aunt and later with my grandparents. After the war, I moved in with an aunt who already had two daughters, who have treated me like their brother."
